Plenary speaker in 2023 for CanBIC-8

PROFESSOR EMMA RAVEN, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL, UK

Professor Emma Raven obtained her BSc Chemistry from the University of Leicester in 1988. She subsequently moved to Newcastle University when she obtained her PhD in 1991, supervised by A Geoffrey Sykes, FRS. In 1992 she moved to the University of British Columbia where she worked with A G Mauk and Michael Smith, FRS. In 1994, she was offered a lectureship at the University of Leicester, where she worked for 23 years. In 2018, she moved to the University of Bristol where she is currently Head of School, Department of Chemistry.

Emma is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). She has received several awards from the Royal Society of Chemistry, including the Inorganic Biochemistry Award, the Reaction Kinetics and Mechanism Award, and the Interdisplinary Prize. She also received a Royal Society Wolfson Award in 2017. She has been the recipient of research fellowships from the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust and the BBSRC. She has served as President of the Royal Society of Chemistry Dalton (Inorganic) Division (2016-2018).

She states that my research is to understand the catalytic activity and biological function in heme containing enzymes. Heme is the prosthetic group found in a number of biologically important proteins (from haemoglobin to catalases) which have a diverse range of biological functions including electron transfer, transportation of gases and chemical catalysis. Our work is focused in three main areas: peroxidases, dioxygenases and the role of heme in the cell. We use kinetic and spectroscopic methods to understand the mechanism and function of heme enzymes, and we collaborate with structural biologists (Prof Peter Moody, University of Leicester) to provide a structural framework for our experiments.
